JAMIA NOORIYYA ARBIYYA

Jamia Nooriyya is rightly considered to be the topmost Islamic University of South India and the master brain of Islamic Preaching in this part of the world. This prestigious centre for Specialized Islamic Learning is well poised to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, this year. One year long programs are to be shortly unveiled as a part of the fabulous celebrations.             Ever since the days of Prophet (S A), Kerala had been blessed by the positive influence of Islam as a way of life. This enlightened state had been enjoying the foremost position in the field of respective knowledge and culture as well. Early source of Islamic acquaintance comprised primarily of the mosque-centred ‘Darses’ and noble platforms of wa’z (traditional mode of Islamic sermon). Malabari city of Ponnani was gloriously destined to host the Makhdoom families who made the city their cultural and educational capital. The city eventually won the title ‘Mecca of Kerala’ and had a high-flying position in the map of Islamic Educational Centres worldwide! History tells us how the scholars from Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives, and Sri Lanka made their way to Ponnani in search of the eternal truth!

But unfortunately, in the course of time, Ponnani lost its pomp in the aftermath of the British invasion of India. It turned out to be a necessity for the Islamic Scholars of Kerala to depend upon distant destinations such as Darul Uloom of Devbandh and Baqiyaat of Vellore to quench the thirst for Divine Wisdom. Meager financial background posed some serious stumbling blocks before their long cherished dreams. It was simply inaccessible for most of them to tide over the hurdles of poverty, remoteness and oppressive climate.

These were the circumstances that catalyzed Samastha Kerala Jamíyyatul ‘Ulema, to take initiative for the establishment of a centre of specialist learning, within the reach of the scholars of Malabar, at the instigation of Kerala’s any time greatest leader Sayyid Ábdurrahman Bafaqi Thangal. This is how Jamia Nooriyya came into being. In this context one can never ignore the land marking, legendary contributions performed by Marhoom K V Bappu Haji and other eminent citizen of the bygone days. And in the historic day of Feb. 3^rd February 1963 Sayyid Shihabudheen Imbichikoya Thangal (Koyaveettil) laid down the foundation stone for Jamia Nooriyya, at the plot donated by Marhoom Bappu Haji.  The same year witnessed the Inaugural Ceremony of Jamia at the hands of the then greatest scholar Qutbi Muhammad Musliyar on March the 18^th.

Yester years of Jamia had been inscribed in the golden pages of history of the renaissance of Muslim community, no doubt. Jamia does have to its credit, the realization of some of the most exalted services that amounts to vibrant milestones as for the Muslim World. Jamia has silently implemented a comprehensive revolution via its great sons that is in the propagation of Islamic knowledge and awareness, around the globe. Up to this year 5561 savants were awarded with the Degree of “Moulavi Fazil Faizi” from this institution. Kerala Muslims are indebted to this prestigious institution for having been guided to the frontiers of triumph.

Ever since its inception into our cultural life, Jamia Nooriyya always had an array of eminent and sincere religious scholars who took over its leadership. Among whom, it is worth mentioning Sayyid Abdurahman Bafaqi Thangal, Panakkad P M S A Pookoya Thangal, world-renowned Islamic scholars such as Shamsul Ulema E K Abu Baker Musliyar, Kanniyath Ahmad Musliyar, Kottumala Abu Baker Musliyar etc. They were to be followed by Panakkad Sayyid Muhammad Ali Shihab Thangal, Chappanangadi Bappu Musliyar, Vaniyambalam Abdurrahman Musliyar, K V Muhammad Musliyar (Koottanadu), P V S Musthafa Pookoya Thangal,  K. K Abu Baker Musliyar Hazrath and K.K Abdulla Musliyar Karuvarakundu.

Governing body consisting of Hon. Sayyid Hyderali Shihab Thangal (President), General Secretary of Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama Cherusseri Zainudheen Musliyar, T.K.Pareekutty Haji and former Education Minister Adv. N. Soopy Sahib (Vice Presidents) Hon. Sayyid Sadikali Shihab Thangal (General Secretary) Haji K.Mammed Faizy and P.Abdul Hameed Master (Joint Secretaries) Kakkodan Moosa Haji (Treasurer) is looking after the day to day affairs of Jamia Nooriyya.

Prof. K.Alikutty Musliyar (Principal) Sheikh M.K Moideen Kutty Musliyar Kottumala, Sheikh A.P Muhammed Musliyar, Sheikh M.T Abdulla Musliyar, P.Kunhani Musliyar, K.T Muhammed Ali Shihab Faizy, P. Sulaiman Faizy and Saleem Faizi Porora are the members of the faculty of Jamia Nooriyya.  

It is remarkable that Jamia could contribute scores of towering personalities, amid its half a century long history. Sayyid Umar Ali Shihab Thangal who had rendered undeniable services for the cause of Islam, Sayyid Hyderali Shihab Thangal who bears key positions  as the President of Indian Union Muslim League, President of Jamia Nooriyya  and Vice-President of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulema Prof. K Alikutty Musliyar, who serves as  the Secretary of Samastha as well as the Principal of Jamia Nooriyya, Bappu musliyar, the ever vigilant Secretary of ‘Samastha’, the two major professors of Jamiah Nooriyya namely, A P Muhammad Musliyar and Kottumala Moideen Kutty Musliyar, and Dr. Bahaauddeen Faizi Nadwi the Vice-chancellor of Darul Huda  Islamic University are some of the bright stars from among a noble galaxy that Jamia has presented to the Muslim Community of India. Besides these great men, the lion part of Muslim Populace of Kerala and the Islamic Institutions thereof, are closely and indispensably related to Jamia Nooriyya.
